Yokosuka History

Yokosuka, city and port in Japan, in Kanagawa Prefecture, on southern Honshû Island and Tokyo Bay, near the city of Tokyo. Yokosuka has a large, sheltered harbor. In the city, which is headquarters for a fleet of whaling ships, are automobile-assembly plants and shipyards. The development of Yokosuka dates from 1865, when a shipyard was established here. Population (1999) 432,889.

• 1565: Ships from Ming (China) arrived in Yokosuka.
• 1607: Foreign trade declined at around the time due to the closed-country policy.
• 1853: The Black Ships from the U.S.A. arrived in Uraga and landed later at Kurihama.

• 1865: The Yokosuka Iron Fourdry (origin of the Port of Yokosuka) was established.
• 1907: Yokosuka was incorporated as a city.
• 1915: Fiftieth anniversary of the Port of Yokosuka.
• 1953: The City of Yokosuka took over management of the Port.
• 1965: Centennial anniversary of the Port of Yokosuka.
• 1974: The Port established sister port affiliations with the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach.
• 1992: The Heisei district reclamation project was completed.
• 1995: The Kurihama district redevelopment project began
